The Union Publishing Co. began printing the "Shelbyville Weekly Union" on May 9, 1863, In 1873. the "Shelby County" was dropped and the word "Shelbyville" was substituted, becoming the "Shelbyville Union" which continued until the late 1940's. In 1887, Horace Martin published Shelby County's first daily newspaper, naming it "The Daily Union". It was then published in multiple locations along Main Street in Shelbyville over the next 20 years, until the building at 100 W. Main was built in 1916 (or 1917). In 1941, R. L. Frazier became the owner and with Tony Storm, published the paper until Frazier's death in 1974. In the 1950s, Frazier's two children, George and Frances, began working at their father's paper where work continued through their father's passing in 1974, and Frances' in 1996. George became the sole owner and publisher until the paper operations were sold in May of 1999 to a successive list of regional and national newspaper groups. Over its long history, stories say it was printed every weekday with only two issues missed-both due to power outages in Shelbyville- one in the 1930s and one in 1967.

Excel Bottling Company

“It all started with a bank robbery...” In 1936 Edward “Lefty” Meier earned a reward for catching a bank robber in Germantown, IL and with his wife Catherine Bruegge Meier bought a used Dixie filler bottling machine, to make small batches of soda at about 20 bottles per minute Excel still uses that bottling machine (along with a few newer ones) to bottle about two dozen flavors of sodas. Now into the 4th generation, the family business is one of the few independent family bottlers in the country and is the only returnable bottling line remaining in Illinois. Tradition runs deep in the company as it branches into small-batch craft brewed teas, premium lemonade, energy drinks, as well as a wide selection of beers. Feel free to stop by the bottling plant located in Breese, Illinois on bottling days to see the century-old bottling line in action and pick up a couple of cases!

Handcrafting soda since 1921, the RSW business has continued without interruption and has maintained its original location. "Good in. Good out"  In addition to using pure cane sugar and natural ingredients, these sodas are triple filtered and undergo a slow carbonation process before bottling. Unlike many large soda manufacturers that flash carbonate, Reading sodas contain pinpoint carbonation that is absorbed slowly and persists longer, leading the way to smaller bubbles that give a smoother mouth feel and more pleasant taste. Reading Draft is one of the few sodas on the market that employs this carbonation technique.
